Q:

eBook Problems under Non-Chinese Windows?

A:

Symptom:

To using EBK file and EBKTool under non-Chinese Windows, the following problems are probably happen:

1.

Can't download the EBK file or other file in Chinese filename from Internet.

2.

Can't see the Chinese filename in file explorer, and get the error message "File not exist" if trying to open the file.

3.

Can't open the Chinese filename EBK file in the CD that bundled with eBook Reader.

4.

Successful open the Chinese EBK file with EBKTool, but can't see the Chinese book name.

5.

Open the Chinese EBK file with EBKTool's "EBK Add-in" function, the Chinese characters can't be shown correctly in "TOC" window.

Solution:

The solutions for different Windows systems are:

To solve problem 1~5 under WinXP and Win2000, read this - Windows XP or Windows 2000

To solve problem 1~2 under Win98 and WinMe, read this - Windows 98/Me "Solution for download and open"

To solve problem 4 under Win98 and WinMe, read this - Windows 98/Me "Install the Chinese font into system"

To solve problem 5 under Win98 and WinMe, read this - Windows 98/Me "Update the EBKTool"

The problem 3 under Win98 and WinMe can't be solved currently. The reason is these two systems don't support double-byte character, and no method to let these systems to open the Chinese filename file that named by a Chinese Windows, even CJK viewer can't display the name correctly.

Windows XP

[Solution for see and download Chinese filename files]

Install the Chinese font:

1.

Click "START" -> "Control Panel" and then double-click "Regional and Language Options".

2.

Click "Languages" tab.

3.

Click to enable the check box of "Install files for East Asian languages", and then click "OK".

4.

The system may prompt for a Windows XP CD-ROM to copy the language files. Wait for the necessary files are copied, restart computer.

[Solution for open Chinese EBK files with EBKTool]

Set Chinese as the locale language:

1.

Click "START" -> "Control Panel" and then double-click "Regional and Language Options".

2.

Click "Advanced" tab.

3.

Click the downward arrow in "Language for non-Unicode programs" box, and then select "Chinese (Taiwan)" from the pull-down menu, and then click "OK".

4.

Restart computer, now you can open the EBK files with EBKTool.

Windows 2000:

Install the Chinese font:

1.

Click "START" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" and then double-click "Regional Options".

2.

Click "General" tab.

3.

Click to select the check box next to "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese", and then click "OK".

4.

Click to select the check box next to "Simplified Chinese" and "Traditional Chinese", and then click "OK".

Set Chinese as the locale language:

1.

Click "START" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel" and then double-click "Regional Options".

2.

Click "General" tab.

3.

Click "Set default? button, the "Select System Locale" window appears.

4.

Click the downward arrow in "Select System Locale" window, and then select "Chinese (Taiwan)" from the pull-down menu, and then click "OK".

5.

Restart computer, now you can open the EBK files with EBKTool

Windows 98/Me:

[Solution for download and open Chinese filename file]

Because Windows 98/Me don't support Unicode natively, to download the Chinese filename file and display the Chinese filename in system, the Windows system should equips the following:

1.

Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 or above, with Chinese package installed.

a) For download Unicode filename file (such as Chinese) from Internet.

b) The earlier version of IE can be upgraded from "Windows Update".

c) To install the Chinese package for IE 6.0, just link to a Chinese web site, IE will

automatic download and install the Chinese package.

2.

CJK viewer (such as NJStar or TwinBridge).

a) For display the Chinese filename of downloaded file.

b) For display the Chinese book name in EBKTool.

c) Trial version of NJStar can be downloaded from http://www.njstar.com

Trial version of TwinBridge can be downloaded from http://www.twinbridge.com

How to download the Chinese filename file:

1.

Upgrade IE to V6.0 or above, and install Chinese package for IE. Refer to the above description to upgrade.

2.

Install CJK viewer (NJStar or TwinBridge).

3.

To download the Chinese filename file, run the CJK viewer first, and then run IE to visit the web site.

4.

After find the Chinese filename file, do not left-click the link to open it directly, please right-click on the link, and then click "Save Target as", a prompt window will ask you what filename and where to save, you can change the name to English or just save it as the original Chinese name.

5.

After the file is downloaded, if the CJK viewer is active, you can see the Chinese filename on your local disk; if the CJK viewer is not active, the Chinese filename will be shown as some unrecognized characters.

How to open the Chinese EBK file with EBKTool:

1.

To open the Chinese EBK file, run the CJK viewer first to see the Chinese filename, and run EBKTool.

2.

Use "Open" button in each function of EBKTool to open the Chinese EBK file.

3.

Note, do not double-click the Chinese EBK file to run EBKTool, otherwise, you won't see the Chinese book name in EBKTool. To see the Chinese book name without CJK viewer, read the instruction in "Install the Chinese font into Win 98/Me system".

[Solution for display the Chinese book name in EBKTool]

Install the Chinese font into Win 98/Me system:

1.

Close EBKTool if it is running.

2.

Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click "Fonts".

3.

In the "Fonts" window, click "File", on the pull-down menu, click "Install New Font".

4.

In the "Add Fonts" window, change the "Folders" to "C:\Program Files\EBKTool3".

5.

Click "Bitstream Cyberbit (TrueType)" in "List of fonts", and then click "OK".

6.

After install the font, you can see the font is installed in "C:\Windows\Fonts" folder.

Set the "Bitstream Cyberbit" font as the default font for EBKTool:

1.

Run EBKTool.

2.

Click "Configure" on the main menu.

3.

Click "Unicode (Multilingual support)", select "Bitstream Cyberbit" as the font, and then click "OK".

4.

Click "Exit" on the main menu to close EBKTool.

5.

Run EBKTool again to active the new configuration, now the Chinese book name will be displayed correctly.

[Solution for display the Chinese "TOC" in EBKTool's "EBK Add-in" function]

Update EBKTool with the patch:

Note: the update is for EBKTool V3.5C Standard only, please do not use it for the other version.

1.

Download this patch file - EBKTool_Update.zip

2.

Close EBKTool if it is running.

3.

Unzip the downloaded file and then copy these two files - "EBKTool3.exe" and "EBKParser.dll" to the EBKTool installed folder (default is C:\Program Files\EBKTool3).

4.

Now the EBKTool is be updated.
